What Is An RSS Feed?

At Barthco, we are just as focused on the industries we serve as we are on our own.  Since the Internet is such a resource for the latest information we have decided to share all the reading and research we do in our Barthco Newsroom.  Essentially, we browse the web so you don’t have to.  Our Newsroom pulls the latest news from around the web and presents it by categories that can be subscribed to based on what interests you.  These subscriptions are in the form of RSS feeds.

RSS explained

RSS (Which stands for Really Simple Syndication) allows you to see when a site has added new content. You can get the latest headlines and articles in one place, as soon as they are published, without having to remember to visit each site every day.

It takes the hassle out of staying up-to-date, by showing you the very latest information that you are interested in.

Not all websites currently provide RSS, but it is growing rapidly in popularity and many others, including The New York Times, AP, Reuters and CNN offer it.

How do I start using RSS feeds?

Basically, you need a news reader. This is an online or offline tool that lets you subscribe to a site and then lets you read any new articles that you've added to your news reader. Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas download-able applications let you store them on your main computer in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail.

Which newsreader should I get?

Some of the more popular newsreaders are; Bloglines , newsgator  and MyYahoo! . Once you have selected and signed up for one of these newsreaders start looking for the  (RSS subscribe button).

For example, if you'd like to subscribe to the 'Chemical industry' news feed in the Barthco newsroom simply click on the  icon and then choose to subscribe to the newsreader you are using from the list.

Finally, all you need to do is check your particular newsreader each day to see if there are any new items to read!
